Te Waimate Mission present a Manu Tukutuku Kitemaking Workshop this Matariki!

This Matariki, learn the art of creating Manu Tukutuku (Māori kites), using traditional materials (raupō, harakeke and toetoe), with skilled artist and weaver, Karel Kaio (Ngāpuhi, Tainui)

Bring a taonga (a treasure) of your own to attach to your kite, and take home a unique A3-sized Manu Tukutuku to fly or display as an artwork.

Manu means both “bird” and “kite”. Tukutuku refers to the winding out of the line as the kite ascends to the stars, connecting Papatūānuku, the earth, with Ranginui, the heavens. A direct line between the living and loved ones who have passed.

• All natural materials are provided, but please do bring with you anything personal you wish to include.
• Morning Tea will also be provided.
• The venue is indoors and lightly heated, so dress warmly, with layers.
• This workshop is aimed at adults. Students over 15-years-old are also welcome.
